What is it all about?
Lesson Title: “It Is Finished”
Text: John 19:30
Introduction
At the cross, in what seemed like defeat, one of the most powerful declarations in all of history was spoken by Jesus Christ:
“It is finished.”
These were not words of surrender—they were words of victory. Not a cry of despair—but a declaration of completion. Everything that heaven intended, everything humanity needed, was fulfilled in that moment.
1. It Is Finished — The Work Is Complete
Jesus did not say, “I am finished.” He said, “It is finished.”
That “it” represents:
- The fulfillment of prophecy
- The completion of God’s redemptive plan
- The mission He was sent to accomplish
From the very beginning, God had a plan to redeem mankind. From the sacrifices in the Old Testament to the promises spoken through the prophets—everything pointed to this moment.
Jesus lived a sinless life, carried our sins, and paid the price in full.
Nothing was left undone.
2. It Is Finished — The Debt Is Paid
The phrase “It is finished” comes from the Greek word tetelestai, meaning:
“Paid in full.”
This was a term used in business transactions when a debt had been completely satisfied.
What does this mean for us?
- The debt of sin has been paid
- The penalty we deserved has been canceled
- The account has been settled
We no longer have to strive to earn salvation—it has already been purchased.
You don’t work for it—you receive it.
3. It Is Finished — The Power of Sin Is Broken
Before the cross:
- Sin had dominion
- Bondage held people captive
- Shame and guilt ruled hearts
But when Jesus said, “It is finished,” the power of sin was broken.
Now:
- Chains can fall
- Addictions can be destroyed
- Lives can be transformed
The cross didn’t just forgive sin—it broke its authority.
4. It Is Finished — Access Is Granted
When Jesus died, the veil in the temple was torn from top to bottom.
That veil separated people from the presence of God.
But now:
- We have direct access to God
- No more separation
- No more barriers
You don’t need a middleman—through Jesus, you can come boldly to God.
5. It Is Finished — Victory Is Secured
The enemy thought the cross was a victory—but it was actually his defeat.
At the cross:
- Satan was defeated
- Death lost its sting
- Hell lost its grip
What looked like the end… was actually the beginning.
Three days later, the resurrection proved that “It is finished” was not the end of the story—it was the seal of victory.
Conclusion
“It is finished” means:
- You are forgiven
- You are free
- You are redeemed
- You are no longer bound by your past
The work has already been done.
The question is not whether Jesus finished the work…
The question is—will you receive what He finished?
Closing Challenge
Stop carrying what Jesus already carried.
Stop paying for what Jesus already paid for.
Walk in the freedom, the authority, and the victory that was declared when He said:
“It is finished.”
