Before deliverance came, God drew attention to one thing — the blood of the lamb. On that first Passover night, Israel’s freedom did not depend on their strength, their history, or their worthiness, but on whether the blood was applied. Tonight we examine the blood of the Lamb — not casually, but carefully — because everything changed where the blood was present. Death passed over, judgment was stopped, and salvation entered the house. The blood was the difference between life and death, bondage and freedom, fear and peace. When we examine the blood of the Lamb, we are not just looking at a symbol, we are looking at God’s provision, God’s protection, and God’s promise that what is covered by the blood will be spared. So lets take a closer examination of the blood that was required the night of the Passover.
“The Night of the Passover — Covered by the Blood”
Text: Exodus 12
Introduction: A Night That Changed Everything
There was one night in Egypt that separated life from death… bondage from freedom… judgment from mercy. It was the night of the Passover. God was about to deliver Israel after 430 years of slavery, but before freedom came, the blood had to be applied.
This was not just history — it was prophecy. The Passover lamb in Exodus points directly to Jesus Christ. The blood on the doorposts in Egypt points to the blood on the cross. And just like then, the difference between life and death was the blood of the lamb.
1. The Lamb Was Chosen (Exodus 12:3-5)
God told every household to select a lamb.
- It had to be without blemish
- It had to be a male of the first year
- It had to be kept and examined
This lamb had to be perfect because it represented a perfect sacrifice.
This points directly to Jesus:
- He was sinless
- He was spotless
- He was examined and found without fault
Pilate said, “I find no fault in him.” The lamb had to be perfect because an imperfect sacrifice could not cover sin.
You cannot be saved by a flawed sacrifice. Only the perfect Lamb can redeem.
2. The Lamb Had to Be Slain (Exodus 12:6)
God did not just tell them to pick a lamb — He told them to kill the lamb.
The power was not in the lamb walking around…
The power was not in the lamb being chosen…
The power was in the shed blood.
Without the shedding of blood, there is no remission of sin.
This is why Jesus had to die.
Not just teach… not just heal… not just perform miracles…
He had to shed His blood.
The Passover teaches us: salvation is not in religion — it's in the blood.
3. The Blood Had to Be Applied (Exodus 12:7)
They were told to take the blood and put it on:
- The top of the doorpost
- The sides of the door
They were not told to:
- Admire the blood
- Talk about the blood
- Store the blood
They had to apply the blood.
This is important — the lamb could die, but if the blood was not applied, the house was still in danger.
You can know about Jesus…
You can believe in Jesus…
You can talk about Jesus…
But until the blood is applied to your life, you are still exposed.
Salvation is personal. Every house had to apply the blood.
4. The Blood Made the Difference (Exodus 12:12-13)
God said, “When I see the blood, I will pass over you.”
He did not say:
- When I see your good works
- When I see your status
- When I see your wealth
- When I see your nationality
He said, When I see the blood.
The blood was the only thing that stopped judgment.
Inside the house may have been:
- Weak people
- Fearful people
- Imperfect people
But they were safe — because of the blood.
It wasn't about who they were… it was about what was over them.
You may feel unworthy… imperfect… broken…
But if you're covered by the blood, judgment passes over you.
5. The Blood Meant Deliverance Was Coming
That same night:
- Pharaoh released Israel
- Chains were broken
- Slavery ended
- Freedom began
The blood didn’t just protect them — it prepared them for deliverance.
When you're covered by the blood:
- Bondage breaks
- Sin loses power
- Freedom begins
- A new life starts
The night of the Passover was the last night in Egypt.
When the blood is applied, you're not staying in bondage.
6. Jesus Is Our Passover Lamb
The Passover was a preview of Calvary.
Jesus is:
- The chosen lamb
- The spotless lamb
- The slain lamb
- The saving lamb
His blood is now on the doorpost of our hearts.
The same promise still stands:
When God sees the blood — judgment passes over.
Closing
That night in Egypt, there were only two kinds of houses:
- Houses covered by the blood
- Houses not covered by the blood
No middle ground. No neutral zone.
And it's still the same today.
The question is not:
Do you go to church?
Do you believe in God?
Do you try to be good?
The real question is:
Are you covered by the blood of the Lamb?
Because when death comes…
When judgment comes…
When eternity comes…
Only one thing matters:
When I see the blood, I will pass over you.
