Scripture Texts:

  • John 1:1-14“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God…”

  • Colossians 2:9“For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.”

Introduction

One of the most important truths in all of Scripture is the deity of Jesus Christ—that He is not merely a good teacher, a wise prophet, or a miracle worker, but God Himself in human flesh. Our faith hinges on this truth. If Jesus is not God, then His death on the cross could not have paid the eternal price for our sins. If He is not God, then His words carry no more authority than any other man’s.

But praise God—the Bible is clear: Jesus Christ is God. From Genesis to Revelation, the Scriptures declare His divine nature. Lets walk through John 1:1–14 and Colossians 2:9 to see why this truth is non-negotiable for our salvation, our worship, and our daily walk.

1. The Eternal Nature of Christ (John 1:1–3)

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

  • Jesus is Eternal – John doesn’t start with Bethlehem; he starts before creation. “In the beginning was…” tells us Christ didn’t come into existence—He already existed.

  • Jesus is Distinct Yet One with the Father – “The Word was with God” speaks of relationship; “The Word was God” speaks of essence.

  • Jesus is Creator – Verse 3 says, “All things were made by him.” The One lying in the manger was the very One who created the wood of the manger and the stars above it.

Application: This means Jesus is not a part of creation—He is Lord over creation. If He made you, then He has the right to rule you.

2. The Revelation of God in Christ (John 1:14)

“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us…”

  • God Came Down – The infinite God took on finite flesh. This is the miracle of the incarnation.

  • Glory Revealed – John says, “We beheld his glory…”—the glory of God was on display in Christ’s compassion, His miracles, His teachings, and ultimately in His sacrifice.

  • Full of Grace and Truth – In Christ, we see the perfect balance of God’s holiness and mercy.

Application: If you want to know what God is like, you don’t have to guess—look at Jesus. His life is the visible picture of the invisible God.

3. The Fullness of God in Christ (Colossians 2:9)

“For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.”

  • Not Partially God – Jesus is not “half man and half God”—He is fully man and fully God.

  • God in Human Form – The “fullness” means everything that makes God, God—His nature, His power, His authority—dwelt in Christ bodily.

  • Permanent Truth – The word “dwelleth” is in the present tense—it is a continuing reality, not just something true during His earthly ministry.

Application: This means when you call on Jesus today, you’re not talking to a memory or a messenger—you are speaking to the living God.

4. Why the Deity of Christ Matters

  1. Salvation Depends on It – Only God can save from sin (Isaiah 43:11). If Jesus is not God, His sacrifice has no eternal value.

  2. Worship Depends on It – To worship anyone less than God is idolatry; to worship Jesus rightly means acknowledging His deity.

  3. Daily Faith Depends on It – If Jesus is truly God, then He is all-powerful, all-knowing, and present in your struggles.

Conclusion

The deity of Christ is not an optional belief—it is the very foundation of our faith. John tells us that “the Word was God” and “the Word was made flesh.” Paul tells us that “in Him dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily.”

This means that when we see Jesus, we see God. When we hear Jesus, we hear God. When we trust in Jesus, we are trusting God Himself.

Call to Action

  • If you are a believer: Live with the awareness that the One who died for you is Almighty God. Trust Him fully.

  • If you are not yet saved: The God of the universe came down for you. Repent of your sin and believe in Jesus Christ, and you will be saved.

Key Takeaway: Jesus is not simply “God’s representative”—He is God revealed, God in the flesh, and God with us.
