"Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new."
2Corinthians 5:17 (kjv)
Introduction
One of the greatest mistakes people make is expecting God to do a new thing while holding on to old ways. Many believers pray for new blessings, new opportunities, new ministries, and new victories, but God first prepares the vessel before He pours out the blessing.
Throughout Scripture we see a divine progression:
- God gives a new beginning.
- God creates a new heart.
- God prepares a new wineskin.
- God makes us a new creation.
- God ultimately makes all things new.
The Lord is teaching us that before there is a new season, there must first be a transformation.
Key Thought: Before there is new wine, there must be a new wineskin. Before there is a new assignment, there must be a new creation in Christ.
I. GOD BEGINS WITH A NEW BEGINNING
Scripture: Exodus 12:2
"This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you."
Israel had spent over 400 years in bondage in Egypt. They were slaves, oppressed, and surrounded by hopelessness. Yet before God brought them out, He did something remarkable.
He reset their calendar.
God essentially said, "Your past no longer defines you. Your future starts now."
Before He changed their location, He changed their perspective.
Many people are waiting for God to change their circumstances when God is only interested in changing their mindset.
God specializes in giving fresh starts.
- Abram became Abraham.
- Jacob became Israel.
- Saul became Paul.
- Simon became Peter.
When God begins a new season, He often starts by declaring a new beginning.
Application
Some people are still living in yesterday's failures, mistakes, and disappointments. But God is saying, "This is your beginning of months."
Your past may explain where you've been, but it does not determine where God is taking you.
II. GOD PROMISES A NEW HEART
Scripture: Ezekiel 36:26
"A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you."
God knew that Israel's greatest problem was not external bondage but internal corruption.
They did not simply need a new environment. They needed a new heart.
A changed life begins with a changed heart.
Many people want God to change their circumstances while refusing to let Him change their character.
Before God can entrust us with greater blessings, He will transform us from the inside out not the outside in.
The heart of stone must become a heart of flesh.
The rebellious spirit must become a yielded spirit.
Application
God may be working on your heart before He works on your situation.
Sometimes the delay is not punishment, it's God's divine strategies for your new life.
Sometimes God is preparing the vessel. So instead of blaming others, consider what God is doing with you.
III. NEW WINE REQUIRES NEW WINESKINS
Scripture: Matthew 9:17
"Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break... but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved."
In biblical times, wineskins were made from animal hides. As they aged, they became stiff and inflexible.
New wine was still fermenting and expanding. An old wineskin could not stretch enough to contain it.
If new wine was poured into an old wineskin, both the wine and the wineskin would be lost.
Jesus was teaching a spiritual principle:
New moves of God require renewed vessels.
God will not pour fresh revelation into stubborn minds.
God will not pour fresh anointing into resistant hearts.
God will not pour fresh purpose into people who refuse to change.
Many believers want the new wine but do not want the new wineskin.
They want a new season while holding onto old habits.
They want new blessings while maintaining old attitudes.
They want new victories while practicing old disobedience.
Application
Ask yourself:
- What old attitudes must I release?
- What old wounds must I surrender?
- What old habits must I give up?
- What old traditions are limiting God's work in my life?
God is preparing a new wineskin for a new season.
IV. IN CHRIST WE BECOME A NEW CREATION
Scripture: 2 Corinthians 5:17
"If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature."
The gospel is not self-improvement. The gospel is transformation.
Jesus did not come merely to make bad people better. He came to make dead people alive.
When we come to Christ:
- Old guilt passes away.
- Old condemnation passes away.
- Old identities pass away.
- Old bondage passes away.
A new life begins.
The believer becomes a completely new creation through the power of God.
Application
Stop identifying yourself by who you used to be.
You are not what happened to you.
You are not what people called you.
You are not your mistakes.
You are a new creation in Christ.
V. GOD WILL MAKE ALL THINGS NEW
Scripture: Revelation 21:5
"Behold, I make all things new."
This is God's final promise.
The God who starts new things finishes them.
The same God who gave Israel a new beginning, who promised a new heart, who requires new wineskins, and who creates new creatures, will one day make all things new.
Every tear will be wiped away.
Every sorrow will be removed.
Every broken thing will be restored.
Every promise will be fulfilled.
The story ends with renewal.
Application
Whatever is broken in your life today is not beyond God's ability to restore.
If God can create a new heaven and a new earth, He can certainly create a new future for you.
Conclusion
God's pattern throughout Scripture is clear:
- Exodus 12:2 — A new beginning.
- Ezekiel 36:26 — A new heart.
- Matthew 9:17 — A new wineskin.
- 2 Corinthians 5:17 — A new creation.
- Revelation 21:5 — All things made new.
God is not interested in patching up the old life.
He is interested in creating something entirely new.
The question is not whether God has new wine.
The question is whether we are willing to become new wineskins.
Altar Call
Today God is calling people into a new season.
Leave behind the old failures.
Leave behind the old bitterness.
Leave behind the old mindset.
Allow God to create a new heart within you.
Allow Him to transform you into a new creation.
And prepare yourself for the new wine He desires to pour into your life.
For behold, He makes all things new.
