The Greater & Lesser Light

Posted 1/5/2025

Scripture: "You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven." (Matthew 5:14-16, NKJV)

Introduction

The world we live in often feels filled with darkness—darkness in the form of despair, division, and moral confusion. Yet, Jesus declares something remarkable in the Sermon on the Mount: "You are the light of the world." This isn't just an observation; it's a commission.

I want to explore three powerful truths from these verses that will help us understand what it means to shine brightly for Christ.

1. You Are the Light of the World

When Jesus says, "You are the light of the world," He is making a statement of identity and purpose.

  • Light symbolizes influence and guidance. Just as a lighthouse directs ships safely to shore, our lives are meant to guide others toward God.
  • The source of light is Christ Himself. We do not produce our own light. As John 8:12 reminds us, Jesus said, "I am the Light of the World." Our role is to reflect His light in a dark world.  Just like the moon does not have its own light, it reflects the light from the sun. (Genesis 1:6)

Application: Ask yourself, "Am I reflecting Christ in my words, actions, and attitudes?"

2. A City on a Hill Cannot Be Hidden

In ancient times, cities were often built on hills for protection and visibility. A city on a hill is unmissable—it shines as a beacon of hope.

  • Visibility is unavoidable. If you are a follower of Christ, people are watching how you live. Your testimony is on display.
  • This visibility is intentional. God places us where we can make an impact—in our families, workplaces, schools, and communities.

Application: Are you allowing your faith to be visible, or are you trying to blend in with the world?

3. Do Not Hide Your Light

Jesus warns against hiding our light under a basket. Why would anyone hide something so essential?

  • Fear, complacency, or compromise can dim our light. Sometimes, we fear rejection, so we keep our faith private. Other times, we get distracted by worldly pursuits, and our light fades.
  • Light is meant to illuminate. A lamp on a lampstand benefits everyone in the house. Similarly, when we shine our light, we bring clarity, hope, and truth to those around us.

Application: What "baskets" are you tempted to hide under—fear, busyness, or distractions? Commit to removing them today.

4. Let Your Light Shine for God's Glory

Jesus gives the ultimate purpose of our light: "That they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven."

  • Our actions point to God. When we serve, forgive, love, and act with integrity, we reflect God's character.
  • God receives the glory. Our light isn’t about drawing attention to ourselves; it’s about leading others to glorify God.

Application: Think about how your "good works" can lead someone closer to God this week.

Conclusion

We live in a world desperately in need of light. Jesus has called you to be that light—not by your power, but by His.

  • Be intentional about where and how you shine.
  • Remember, a small light can dispel great darkness.

Let’s commit to shining brightly so that others may see the hope, love, and truth of Christ in us.

Closing Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for calling us to be the light of the world. Help us to reflect Your glory in every area of our lives. Remove anything that hinders our light from shining, and use us to lead others to You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
